White Hart at Witley

Review of White Hart Witley

Lots of the smokehouses that are springing up recently are urban in nature, but for me really BBQ is at it’s best in the more relaxed countryside. I have seen a few new places appearing in the country as the good word of true smoke is spreading, and it fills me with joy when they are good.

I’d heard lots of good things in the CountryWoodSmoke Facebook Group about the White Hart at Witley in Surrey. So on a recent business trip I had the opportunity to visit on a sunny Sunday lunchtime.

I went for a £20 trio of ribs, beef short rib, Iberico baby backs and a thick cut spare rib. As you can see in the video below I was pretty impressed. The ribs were good eating. The spare was a large single rib, but had most of the belly on, was nicely smoked with a good sauce. The baby backs were well cooked and had a great dry rub on. I really enjoyed the single rib, it was one big beautiful rib, super juicy meat, a nice seam of fat and a great sauce on. The shortie was really good too, the bark had gone maybe a bit too crisp in places where it had been grilled a bit prior to serving, and the sugar in the sauce had caught a bit giving a slightly bitter burnt in places, but it was really good. I like a good fatty shortie and this certainly delivered. Thrice cooked chips were really good, as well as the BBQ sauce.

A beautiful location, an outside seating area for summer, a good supply of beer and whiskey make for a very pleasant BBQ experience. I caught a spy of some of the burgers coming out and they looked pretty wonderful, so would try those next. All in all a great BBQ smokehouse in a lovely old country pub.
